Dye Your Wig From Black to Chocolate Brown

Posted on January 29 2024

Looking to switch up your wig without buying a new one? This will be the easiest and fastest way to bleach your hair from black to brown. It can be done within 10 minutes!

Disclaimer: Please use your own discretion when doing a bleach bath on your wig. If the wig has any extra dyes to make the wig black, or is chemically processed then it may not bleach as well, or shed profusely.

Products You'll Need For a Bleach Bath

Most products can be purchased at your local beauty supply store.

  • Bleach Powder

BW2 Bleach Powder

  • Developer (We used 50 volume, but start with 30/40 if you are a beginner so you don't fry your hair).

Got everything? Okay, let's get into it!

The Process | Bleach Bath

If you're more of a visual learner, watch our video here on how to get that beautiful chocolate brown wig!

Step 1: Boil Some Water

Before you start anything, boil some water. Hot water will speed up the chemical process.

Step 2: Mix Bleach & Developer

In the non-metal container, pour some bleach powder, and then developer. If you've been around us for a while, you know we don't do no measurements. However, the longer the hair, the more product you should use!

The reason you do not want to use metal during this process is because "Metal can actually interfere with the chemical reaction". You should opt for a plastic, ceramic, or glass bowl and utensils instead.

Just make sure to not use too much developer, the hot water will do most of the work for you. But also ensure that the bleach powder isn't too clumpy, you want the mixture to be similar to toothpaste.

Step 3: Add Your Boiling-Hot Water

Carefully, add your boiled water into the container. If your bleach & developer mix was clumpy, use your dye brush (or whatever you used to mix it previously) and mix it some more while adding more developer.

If you ran out of developer, that is okay, the hair will still bleach.

Step 4: Place the Wig In the Water

Place your wig in the water. Since the water is quite hot, use a denman brush and/or tongs so you can work the product evenly through the hair. This is an important step. If you skip this, your hair will be light brown at the roots and chocolate brown throughout the hair. It will not look good!

Step 5: Cover the Container With Aluminium Foil

This step is optional. If your hair is good quality virgin hair, by this point, it should have already started bleaching some. But, covering it with aluminium foil will speed up the process even more to achieve the perfect chocolate brown wig.

Congratulations! You now have (hopefully) successfully got the color you were trying to achieve!
