Black HAIR-Story Month: Madam CJ Walker

Posted on February 05 2024

If you've seen Netflix's Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, then you know all about Sarah Breedlove (a.k.a. Madam C.J Walker), an icon, often referred to as the "first self-made female millionaire in America," a trailblazer whose impact reached far beyond the her living.

The Rise: From Washerwoman to Entrepreneur

Born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 & then working as a washerwoman, Walker had her own issues —hair-loss. She had a problem, and solved it for herself and others—hence her success. She wasn't the first to do it. In fact, Annie Turnbo Malone walked so Walker could run (we ain't forget about you Miss Annie!)

The Netflix movie "Self Made" captures this rise from humble beginnings to an entrepreneurial powerhouse, but there's more to the story.

A Unique Approach to Entrepreneurship

Walker's success wasn't just about creating & selling haircare products; it was about empowerment. She sold confidence, independence, and the idea that beauty knows no bounds. In a time when societal norms often limited opportunities for black women, Walker's brand was revolutionary.

Her unique approach resonated not only with the African American community but also with women across various backgrounds.

Philanthropy and Activism

Walker used her wealth to support causes she believed in, including educational initiatives and the anti-lynching movement.

Her advocacy for economic independence for black individuals extended beyond her business, making her a pioneer not only in beauty but also in social change.

Did you know that she opened a factory and hair school called Lelia College? At Lelia College, she taught women to become "hair culturists". Pretty cool right?

Hidden Struggles: The Price of Success

The pressures of success, combined with the societal expectations placed on black women, reveal a layer of Walker's life that is rarely talked about. The Netflix series provides a glimpse into the struggles she faced, but the toll of being a groundbreaking entrepreneur, an activist, and a mother is a nuanced tale often overlooked.

For example, we don't know all the tea about why Madam C.J. Walker and her husband split, but sources say, "their relationship collapsed because of "ambition, drive, and sometimes just growing apart." But there were other factors involved.".
